How To Be A New Yorker

How to Be a New Yorker

Hi! I’m a New Yorker. Well… more accurately, I was born in New York and moved away when I was 4. How much New Yorkiness can one absorb in 4 years… Well, to clarify, I have no accent, I don’t say dead ass a lot, and I only just found out that Flushing (neighborhood) is in Queens (borrow.) Somehow I though they were 2 different places, evidently that’s where I’m from… Embarrrrrrassing. Thankfully, I still have my family in New York and they so graciously helped me get in touch with my roots; well, basically they taught me how to be a New Yorker. So if you’re curious what give New Yorkers their special sauce, this is how to be a New Yorker, told by my family.

Tips on How to Be a New Yorker

Told By my Family

  1. Your life needs to be busy
  2. The borough you were born in is always better than every other borough (even though I high key love Brooklyn Shhhh!)
  3. New Yorkers don’t have accents, everyone else does
  4. Queens girls are nicer (clearly)
  5. You have to dress the part
  6. New Yorkers love the winter time (I never developed that love)
  7. Paying for public transportation is optional (JK)
  8. New Yorkers are the most authentic people in the world. What you see is what you get!

It’s crazy to think of who I’d be if I’d stayed in New York! I’d definitely speak a lot different. I’m grateful for all the places I’ve lived, I carry a little piece of each place in my heart. But taking a trip back home and connecting with my roots was magical. Maybe one day I might even consider moving back, I’m still working on that “accent.” I’m a true believer that when you know where you come from, you know where you’re going. And this little fluffy haired girl want’s to go everywhere!
